Challenges

The construction sector is responsible for a significant share of resource consumption and waste generation in Europe. At the same time, much of the existing building stock is based on rigid designs that are difficult to adapt to evolving user needs and environmental requirements.

In the context of ambitious climate neutrality targets and the need to reduce environmental impacts, the renovation and design of sustainable, circular and flexible buildings have become key priorities.

In response to these challenges, LE-COLAZ proposes an innovative approach combining modular construction, circular economy principles and advanced digital technologies to rethink building construction and renovation as adaptive, reusable and resource-efficient processes.

Objectives

The Le’ Colaz project aims to develop a modular construction system inspired by LEGO-like building principles, integrating bio-based and recycled materials and components designed for easy assembly and disassembly in order to support reuse and circularity.

The project relies on a combination of material and digital innovations:

  • Circular construction modules: development of components designed to be easily assembled, disassembled and reused, in line with circular economy principles.
  • Integrated digital platforms: implementation of an IoM² (Internet of Materials Module) platform based on IoT sensors and Digital Product Passports for performance monitoring, together with an IoB² (Internet of Building Brain) system powered by artificial intelligence to support renovation decisions, local reuse of components and adaptation to regulatory frameworks.
  • Validation in real-life environments: testing in Living Labs in Athens and Trondheim, combining simulation and real-world measurements to demonstrate measurable improvements in energy efficiency, circularity and structural adaptability.

Through this systemic approach, Le’ Colaz aims to deliver scalable solutions for a more sustainable built environment, reduce construction waste, extend the lifetime of buildings and improve the flexibility of building spaces.
